If it costs more to promote British culture, British culture will lose out to the competition. There’s a reason why British literature and European folk tales were so popular in American popular culture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; neither was covered by copyright when they were appropriated.

  1. Have we found out yet whether NPG received a loan/advance/grant from the public purse to cover the costs of digitisation (scanning only, excluding online misadventures)?
If it’s a grant then those images are OURS!
If not, then it’s a matter of choosing between tax/subscription to cover the costs. Suspension of our cultural liberty is not an option.
